GOLDEN FROG FOR "PAPARAZZI"
Category: Events"Paparazzi" won the Grand Prix in the Short Documentary Films Competition at the Plus Camerimage Festival in Bydgoszcz. The Golden Frog went to cinematographers Łukasz Żal and Piotr Bernaś.
" Paparazzi" is Piotr Bernaś’s debut created as part of the documentary programme DOC PRO at the Wajda School. This is a documentary about a Polish paparazzo (Przemysław Stoppa), who makes controversial choices on a daily basis, and then bears their consequences on emotional, personal and ethical grounds. Initially, the cinematography was made by the director, but soon a professional cinematographer joined the project - it was Łukasz Żal. "I had the feeling that when I worked both as a director and cameraman I was losing a lot" - Bernaś admitted in an interview. Łukasz Żal entered this project with his whole being. He wanted me to make this film without looking how long it would take (...). His task became doubly difficult when he had to adjust his cinematography to a reporter's style of shots from my hand-held camera." The interview with the DoP can be found here.
Apart from "Paparazzi", another project produced as part of the DOC PRO programme at the Wajda School qualified for the Short Documentary Film Competition at Plus Camerimage - "Decrescendo"(dir. Marta Minorowicz), with cinematography by Paweł Chorzępa. The interview with the cinematographer can be seen here.
Among the Polish winners of the International Festival of the Art of Cinematography there were also Jolanta Dylewska ("In Darkness", dir. Agnieszka Holland), Radosław Ładczuk ("Suicide Room", dir. Jan Komasa), Tomasz Wolski ("Doctors", dir. Tomasz Wolski) and Wojciech Staroń ("The Argentinian Lesson", dir. Wojciech Staroń).
Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!
