SAUTER'S PREMIERE AT THE POLISH FILM FESTIVAL
The premiere of the full-length feature film debut by Marcin Sauter will take place at the 34 Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. 'The North of Calabria' is among the first full-length films produced by the Munk Studio operating within the Polish Filmmakers Association and the Andrzej Wajda School.
The film is a kind of a happening, an improvisation on the events outlined in the script. The spontaneous progress of the events is registered by a documentary camera. Real people – residents of a town Chełmsko ¦l±skie – and actors introduced to the town by the director, play in the film next to each other. For a month, they are all involved in organising the summer fest. Each of them is given a task, which will be later presented at the final fest. Actress Hania directs a play with the residents as actors. Darek, a handyman, is to build the scene with the help of local carpenters, Thierry has to teach the local ladies how to cook Italian food, etc. All is supervised by the mayor. The events focus on the characters within the confined area of the town, and what binds all the episodes together is the main square, where the characters meet. Three amateur filmmakers sitting on the roof of one of the buildings observe the residents' struggles and produce their own film with the participation of the film characters.
Something really nice and good was happening in this town between its inhabitants and the film crew – Marin Sauter says – and I think this atmosphere shows in the film.
Each of the guests brings to the film their personality, sense of humour and the way of communicating with other residents. By observing the preparations for the fest, the director creates an image of a place - a town, where living is easy. Where people know each other and tolerate each other's faults, where they meet to talk. For one summer month, Chełmsko became a location set for a film about a perfect town.
Marcin Sauter has chosen an extremely rare genre in Polish filmmaking, but well known in the world cinema: the docu-drama. Choosing this kind of the artistic expression, the author refers to the tradition of the Polish documentary film school masters such as Kazimierz Karabasz and Krzysztof Kie¶lowski. The artistic supervisor of the film was Wojciech Marczewski.
The film can be seen at the 34 Polish Film Festival in Gdynia at two presentations of the Panorama of Polish Cinema series – on Monday, 14 September at 3 p.m. and on Friday, 18 September at 7 p.m., in the Multikino at ul. Waszyngtona 21, Gdynia.

The film is an attempt to create a place – a town, where living is easy. Where people know each other, tolerate each other’s faults, meet each other to talk and just to be together. Making of this film was a kind of a happening. Actors and people from outside moved into a small Silesian town and - along with its inhabitants - they were organizing a big fest. In a confined space of the market square and a few small streets working, talking and spending time together has dominated life of Chełmsko ¦l±skie. For one summer month Chełmsko has become a decoration in the film about an ideal town.
The Andrzej Munk Studio 'The Young and Film' is a producer and co-producer of feature, documentary and animated film debuts. It was established by the Polish Filmmakers Association, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Polish Film Institute in March 2008. In April, their initiative was also joined by Telewizja Polska S.A. The goal of the Studio is to produce films including full-length debut films, future films within the framework of the '30 Minutes' programme, documentary films within the framework of the 'First Documentary' programme and animated films as part of the 'Young Animation' programme. As many as 11 films produced or co-produced by the Studio will be presented at various sections of this year's 34 Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
